Australian Sardine Salt and Capsules

Why sardine products became the next step in the Grassland Nutrition story

Grassland Nutrition has always been about reconnecting people with truly nutrient-dense foods; the kinds of foods our grandparents instinctively understood, but modern diets have largely forgotten.

For almost a decade, we’ve focused on regenerative Australian beef organs, mineral-rich wholefoods, and bringing traditional nourishment back into everyday life. But there was one important piece missing from the puzzle: a clean, sustainable source of marine-based omega-3s.

Our co-founder, Kel, and resident NPD extraordinaire, spent almost two years sourcing, testing, refining, and patiently waiting for the right fit. Earlier this year, we were incredibly excited to finally launch our new sardine range in partnership with Port Lincoln Sardines, also a family operation.

You can explore our initial collection here:

Why Sardines?

When most people think about omega-3s, they think fish oil capsules. The problem is that many omega-3 supplements are heavily processed, extracted products -far removed from the “nature’s ready-made package” philosophy we strive for at Grassland Nutrition.

Whole sardines offer something far more complete. They are naturally rich in the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). These forms are most readily used by the body to support the brain, nervous system, cardiovascular health and healthy inflammatory function.

While plant foods like flax, chia and walnuts contain omega-3s in the form of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), the body must convert ALA into EPA and DHA, and for many people, that conversion can be quite limited.

That’s why marine foods like sardines are considered one of the most effective dietary sources of bioavailable omega-3s.

Australian sardines are also naturally rich in protein, selenium, calcium, vitamin D and B12, making them one of the most nutrient-dense foods available.

Why Port Lincoln Sardines?

We wanted a product that aligned with the same principles we apply across every Grassland Nutrition product:

  • sustainably sourced
  • minimally processed
  • nutrient dense
  • Australian
  • simple ingredients

The sardines from Port Lincoln Sardines checked every box. These small pelagic fish sit low on the food chain, making them naturally lower in heavy metals while still delivering impressive omega-3 content.

They’re wild-caught in clean Australian waters and carefully processed to preserve both flavour and nutrition.

“But I Don’t Like the Taste of Sardines…”

We hear this all the time, and honestly, we get it. Not everyone grew up eating traditional seafood, and sardines can feel like a big leap if you’re new to nutrient-dense foods.

That’s exactly why we created flexible ways to incorporate them into your routine. If eating whole sardines feels intimidating at first, many people simply:

  • add a small amount to meals gradually
  • mix them through salads, eggs or rice bowls
  • blend them into sauces or broths
  • use the fermented sardine salt as a savoury, mineral-rich seasoning

And for those simply wanting the nutritional benefits without sitting down to a full serve, then the equivalent of around five of our wild-caught whole sardine capsules daily (or a small consistent portion) can be a practical way to support omega-3 intake over time.

Our Favourite: Fermented Sardine Salt

One of the products we’re most excited about is the fermented sardine salt.

It’s an easy, everyday way to bring marine minerals, umami flavour and wholefood nourishment into your meals, without needing to eat whole fish constantly.

Sprinkle it over:

  • eggs
  • steak
  • avocado
  • salads
  • roast vegetables
  • bone broth
  • popcorn
  • or just about anything savoury

It adds incredible depth of flavour while helping increase nutrient and omega-3 intake in a genuinely practical way.

Why This Launch Matters to Us

This launch represents more than just another product line. It’s another step toward rebuilding a truly nutrient-dense food system, one that respects traditional foods, supports Australian producers, and gives people access to nourishment in forms that are simple, practical and deeply bioavailable.

After two years behind the scenes, we’re proud to finally share these products with you.

And if you try them, we’d genuinely love to hear what you think.

Watch this space as we’re continuing to work on thoughtful additions that genuinely make sense for human biology, particularly where modern lifestyles and food systems have created clear nutritional gaps.

Australian Sardine Salt and Capsule FAQs

What are Sardine Products good for?

Our Australian Sardine Products are commonly used to support natural omega-3 intake, brain health, joint support, skin health and whole-food nutrition. Products made from wild-caught sardines can also provide naturally occurring DHA, EPA, marine minerals and collagen-supporting nutrients.

Why are Australian wild-caught sardines considered nutritious?

Australian wild-caught sardines are naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, calcium, trace minerals and marine nutrients. Because sardines are small oily fish, they are often chosen as a whole-food source of DHA and EPA.

What makes Grassland Nutrition Australian sardine salt and capsules different?

Grassland Nutrition focuses on whole-food Australian Sardine Products made with wild-caught sardines and natural fermentation processes rather than heavily refined fish oils. Their approach emphasises nutrient density, digestibility and minimal processing.

Are fermented sardine products better than traditional fish oil supplements?

Fermented sardine products may appeal to people looking for a whole-food alternative to processed fish oil capsules. Fermentation can help improve digestibility while retaining naturally occurring marine fats, amino acids and minerals in their original food form.

Why are sustainably sourced Australian sardines important?

Sustainably sourced Australian sardines help support responsible fishing practices, seafood traceability and long-term marine health. Many consumers now look for Australian sardine products that clearly identify sourcing and production methods.
